GIAN Course on Fixed Wing UAVs (Drones)

A GIAN course on Design & Applications of Fixed Wing UAVs (Drones) was conducted by Dr. Sathyanarayana A and Dr. Yogesh G. Bhumkar in IIT Bhubaneswar along with technical & financial assistance from DIC, IIT Bhubaneswar from 12th - 23rd December 2016. The course was taught by Prof. Sumon K. Sinha, SINHATECH, Retired Professor, University of Mississippi, USA. Prof. Sinha was assisted by Mr. Sumontro Sinha, a licensed FAA Drone pilot.

The course had over 37 participants including students & professionals from IIT Kanpur, BITS Pilani, VSSC - ISRO Trivandrum and other colleges and institutions across the nation. While the course had lectures related to the design of drones including fundamentals of aerodynamics, flight control, stability, aircraft structures, avionics and other related material the design of drones, an important and exhaustive part of the course was hands on training on flying the drones and designing & building them.

The participants were divided into 9 groups and each was asked to choose a specific mission parameters that their drone will meet. The groups then proceeded to perform various calculations and design estimates based on the mission profiles and designed & built various drones. About 9 drones were built from both prefabricated kits as well as from the scratch. Drones were built for applications like reconnaissance & aerial photography, delivery of critical supplies (water, medicines etc), instrumented platform for weather data collection, biplane & flying wing as proof of concept, drone pilot training among others.

The students also interacted with the Honorable Director, Prof. V. Raja Kumar who encouraged all the students to continue this new-found enthusiasm to design drones for defense, agriculture and other requirements of the country, incubate the ideas & participate in setting up start-ups at the Institute. The Director also suggested that an Aero Club be setup in the Institute for facilitating these activities of drone development.

Students are continuing to engage with DIC and various faculty members of the School of Mechanical Sciences in further developing drone platforms.

A ONE-DAY WORKSHOP ON "Innovation in Education and Engineering Design- IEED2016"

A one-day workshop on “Innovation in Education and Engineering Design – IEED2016” was organised by IIT Bhubaneswar in collaboration with the Planning and Convergence Department, Government of Odisha on 5th November, 2016. Design Innovation Centre (DIC) at IIT Bhubaneswar coordinated the event with the prime objective of bringing together the two prime stake holders, namely, the ‘teaching community’ and the ‘policy makers’ to a single platform in order to discuss various aspects of Innovation that can be brought into education in general and particularly in Engineering Design.

Shri R. Gopalakrishnan, Ex-Director, TATA Sons Ltd., graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Prof. R. V. Raja Kumar, Director, IIT Bhubaneswar presided over the event. Shri. R. Balakrishnan, Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary, Govt. of Odisha, and Shri. N. K. Nayak, OSD, Planning and Convergence Department, Govt. of Odisha graced the occasion as Guests of Honour for the inaugural ceremony. The Chief Guest shared his vast experience in the field of innovation and suggested that IIT Bhubaneswar and Government of Odisha should collaboratively introduce an MBA Degree in Design Management. He envisioned this program to have six possible verticals such as Arts & Architecture, Botany & Biology, Digital Robotics & Artificial Intelligence, Neuro Science, Design Engineering and Integration.

The inaugural session was followed by three sessions of brainstorming deliberation. Many eminent speakers like Prof. R. V. Raja Kumar, Director, IIT Bhubaneswar, Prof. B. Gurumoorthy, IISc Bangalore, Dr. Satya P. Dash, Head Strategy, Partnership and Entrepreneurship Development, BIRAC, Shri. H. Senapaty, Director NCERT and Prof. K. R. Srivathsan, IIT Bhubaneswar enthralled the audience with their talks and interactive sessions with the participants. While sharing his more than three decades of teaching-learning experience, Director, IIT Bhubaneswar lucidly explained various innovative approaches in Engineering Design Education that should be followed in order to impart a holistic development of our students. It was a great opportunity for the participants, who were from various government funded engineering institutes, universities, schools and the Government of Odisha, to hear and learn from such eminent personalities.

Also, during this workshop the Planning and Convergence Department, Govt. of Odisha has offered two Awards under Awards for Innovative Ideas and one Award under Awards for Successful Innovative Proven Concept/Projects/Prototypes.

A one-day interactive workshop on "Patent Writing" was organized by the Design Innovation Centre (DIC) at IIT Bhubaneswar for two separate batches (one for Masters and Doctoral students and another for Undergraduate students) on 13th and 14th February, 2016 in the Institute Auditorium. Mr. Prashant Patankar, founder and Proprietor of NOVO IP, Pune, was invited for conducting the workshop. Mr. Patankar's company provides consultancy for all forms of intellectual property rights. His firm has deep strength in diverse technical fields including Mechanical, Pharmaceuticals, Polymer, Life Sciences, Electronics, Telecom, IT, Medical Devices, Agriculture, Power Sector, Textile and Material technology. More than Fifty students from various schools of the Institute participated in the event. In the workshop, the student participants were exposed to various aspects of intellectual property rights and received first-hand training on writing and filing patent applications. Certificate of participation were given to all the students who participated in the workshop.

" A four‐day workshop on "Robotics" was organised by the Design Innovation Centre at IIT Bhubaneswar from 9th to 12th December, 2015 in the Institute Auditorium. Thirty seven students from various schools of the institute participated in the event. In the workshop they learnt about various aspects of embedded robotics and had hands‐on training on many types of sensors, actuators and controllers. On the final day of the event they built their own maze solving robots by applying all the skills that they had acquired during the workshop. The robots contested with each other in terms of speed and accuracy and smoothness in solving the maze and the winning robots were accorded with many prizes under various categories. Certificates of participation were given to all the participants who successfully completed the workshop. "

" DIC organized a workshop on 'Free hand sketching' on 22 August, 2015 (Saturday) at Community Center, IIT Bhubaneswar Argul Campus. Shri Meenaketan Pattnaik from B K College of art conducted the workshop. He had experience in conducting such workshops at different organizations including IDC IIT Bombay. The workshop was concentrated around different shades of sketching, 3D object sketching, Face Sketches and to appreciate the difference between Drawing and Sketching. "
